‘Freie Universität Berlin’ by Foster + Partners

On 14 September 2005, the Freie Universität Berlin celebrated the official opening of its Philology Library designed by world-renown architect Lord Foster of Thames Bank.

Foster + Partners was commissioned for the renovation of the Philology Library in 1997 after entering and winning an architectural competition held by the University and the Berlin Senat Administration for Urban Development for the renovation of an area of campus known as the Rostlaube.  Foster and his team maintained the architectural integrity of the previous structures surrounding the Library while incorporating advanced engineering resulting in a library that is ecologically and environmentally sensitive.

‘Occupying a central role in the intellectual life of Berlin since the end of World War II, the Free University is not only one of the city’s most symbolically important institutions, but one of the leading universities in Germany. Its redevelopment includes the restoration of the campus’ iconic Modernist buildings and the design of a new library for the Faculty of Philology.’
