To mark the name change of ‘The Freedom Tower’ to ‘1 World Trade Center’, the New York Times invited amateur and professional designers to come up with a logo for the building.
Yesterday they published a number of the submitted works – while some designers took the challenge seriously others saw it as an opportunity to make a political / social statement.
“Many will always refer to it as the Freedom Tower,” Stephen Sigmund, the chief of public and government affairs at the authority, wrote in an e-mail message. “But as the building moves out of the planning stage and into full construction and leasing (the building is now 10 stories above ground), we believe that, going forward, it is most practical to market the building as 1 World Trade Center.”
